Section 7: Incarnation and Jesus’ Work of Creation and Salvation for us
7.1 Connect.
When Jesus came to earth, He paid a great price! Paul says that Jesus “emptied himself”
(Phil. 2:7). We know that Jesus was 100% human and 100% God. Yet, to become 100% man,
Jesus had to temporarily “set aside” some of his godly attributes. For example, to be a man,
He could not be everywhere at the same time. He confined Himself to a body with the
limitations of that body. He got hungry, tired, and experienced the same emotions that we
as humans experience. He had to learn just like we do. He did know instantly know everything, but had
to study the scriptures and increased in knowledge and wisdom.
Yet as God, He was perfect and never sinned. He knew the hearts of men. He expressed His boundless
love to everyone, proving His love by His willingness to take our place of judgment for our sin. During
His short stay on earth, He demonstrated to everyone that He was BOTH God and man. Today, we are
going to learn how this is possible. Let’s get started. . .
7.2 Objectives.
1. Students should be able to evaluate and describe the meaning and implications of the
emptying of Jesus Christ through our reliance on the context of Philippians 2:1-11.
2. Students should be able to describe hypostatic union and its theological implications.
3. Students should be able to describe false teachings on the biblical teaching of hypostatic union and
the church councils’ response to those heretical teachings.
4. Students should be able to describe how Jesus fulfilled the three offices and summarize the
theological importance found in that fulfilment.
5. Students should be able to define the impeccability of Jesus as revealed from the Scriptures and
evaluate the implications theologically.
6. Students should be able to define Jesus’ work of creation and salvation and evaluate their
implications to us.
7.3 Incarnation and Jesus’ Work of Creation and Saving Human Beings.
Kenosis (emptying) of Christ (Philippians 2:5-8)
The emptying of Jesus Christ is a crucial subject as our salvation relies on it.
