Acts 16:1. Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy
lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek.
When Paul left Lystra he took Timothy with him as a disciple, and Paul became like a spiritual father
to him.
1 Timothy 1:2. To Timothy my true son in the faith.
2 Timothy 1:2. To Timothy, my dear son.
Philippians 2:22. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with
his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.
• Timothy became one of Paul’s fellow-laborers – a disciple.
Romans 16:21. Timothy, my co-worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason
and Sosipater, my fellow Jews.
1 Corinthians 16:10. When Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while
he is with you, for he is carrying on the work of the Lord, just as I am.

service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your

Nothing is known about his conversion or his family other than that we know he was a
Gentile whom Paul refused to allow to be circumcised by those in Jerusalem as an
expression of the freedom of the gospel.
