12.5 Let’s Personalize this lesson…
Activity: Has this study changed the way you think about giving to God? I hope so. So
many churches and pastors still demand that their people tithe to the church on a
weekly basis. It’s strange that while they teach that we are not under the Law, they
place their people under the demands of the Mosaic Law of the Tithe. And actually the
Mosaic Law required 10% twice per year, once given to the temple and once to the
Levites, and then another 10% every three years to meet the needs of orphans and widows which had to
be cared for. So the actual tithe paid by an Israeli in the Old Testament was about 23% per year. So if
you really want to place the church under the Mosaic Law of the Tithe, ask them to give 23% of their
income rather than 10%. That’s much more accurate to the actual amount.
If this lesson has touched you, share it with others. We need to realize that we are to give as God has
touched our hearts to give. I personally have found that God touches me for much more than 10%!
