The crowd concluded that Jesus was a “Prophet” predicted by Moses (Deut. 18:15 - The LORD
your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen
to him.)
The people were looking for Him to make Him their King.
The previous evening, His disciples had gotten into a boat and attempted to cross over the sea
to the other side but got caught in a storm. Jesus had not come with them. Suddenly, Jesus
appeared to them, walking on the water. He entered the boat and immediately, they were at
the other side.
The 5,000 were looking for Jesus and could not figure how he got to the other side with His
disciples. They began to question Jesus.
The people wanted to see more miracles, especially more bread!
Jesus explained to the crowd that He was the Bread of Life that they should be looking for and
that their greatest need was spiritual bread, not physical bread.
He pressed home the point that eternal life is for those who partake of His flesh and His blood.
Those who do so “will live forever.”
The crowd responded with doubt and departure. “Who can accept this?” was their response.
They began to leave Jesus. Now, consider the Word….
When a person believes in the teachings of Jesus and experiences a relationship with Him, then
you KNOW Jesus for who He really is – the Son of God and the only Savior of the Word.
1. Consider His Miracles….
He raised three people up to life who had previously died!
He turned plain water into the best of wine, instantly.
He filled the belly of 4000, then 5000 men, besides women and children with just a few loaves of
bread and fish.
He walked on the Sea of Galilee. He spoke to the storm, and it became instantly silent.
He was transfigured before three of his disciples and talked with Elijah and Moses.
He paid his temple tax with a coin in the mouth of a fish.
He cursed a fig tree with his mouth, and it immediately withered.
He excised several demons nine times.
And he healed literally thousands of such diseases as leprosy, paralysis, uncontrollable bleeding,
stomach ailments, dropsy, withered hands, and life-long blindness.
4 Words to describe miracles…
Dunamis – (“miracle,” translated in other contexts, “Power.”) It refers to the powerful source
behind the miracle most common in the synoptic Gospels, but John never uses it.
Semeion – (“sign”). It focuses on the purpose of the miracle, i.e., why was the miracle
performed?
