Study Section 12: The Faith Walk
Answering the Call to Ministry
12.1 Connect.
Have you ever read the famous passage in Hebrews 11 about the Old Testament saints
who walked by faith? The list of people bore witness that they walked by faith in
obedience to God. Many saw amazing miracles. They saw the power of God in their lives.
But many paid the price of walking by faith.
Hebrews 11: 35-38 Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a
36
37
better life. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were
stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and
goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in
38
deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
God calls us to live by faith. We hope we don’t have to walk as some of these faithful did, for they
endured great suffering. Today we want to learn what it means to walk by faith.
12.2 Objectives:
1. The student should be able to describe how Jesus takes us through difficult times to
teach us to walk by faith.
2. The student should be able to describe that we must listen to God should He call us to
special ministry.
3. The student should be able to describe the three principles to apply to our lives in order to receive
God’s call to ministry.
12.3 The Faith Walk
Mark 4: 35-41 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to
the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he
36
was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were
37
38
breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern,
asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that
we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be
39
40
still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have
you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that
41
even the wind and the sea obey him?”
This passage of Scripture tells us something walking with Jesus by faith. Jesus is God. He knows
everything that happened in the past and what will happen in the future. He directed His disciples to
get into a boat, knowing that a great storm would come. He purposely took his disciples into a storm.
