Section 14: Work of Jesus Christ; Part I
14.1. Connect.
In the book of Revelation, Jesus Christ is described as a person who “was, and is, and is to
come.” This description of Christ defines Him as the “Eternal One.” Also in this description,
Jesus’ was at work in the past, in the present, and will be in the future. We know from the
Bible that in the past, Jesus was the Creator of the universe. We know that presently, He is
the sustainer of the world. He takes care of us. And we know that in the future, He will come to
judge the earth and conquer sin to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
There are stages under the umbrella of the work of Jesus Christ. There is that stage that relates to
the Creation of everything. There is his work to provide us salvation. There is that part that pertains
to His current and future work. In this section, we will learn about His creation and his work bringing
us salvation. In the next couple of sections, we will focus on Jesus’ current and future work.
14.2. Objectives.
1. The student should be able to discuss the passages that affirm Jesus Christ as the Creator.
2. The student should be able to cite some Scriptures that define work of Jesus Christ to
provide salvation for men.
14.3. Jesus’ Work of Creation and Salvation for Man
Jesus’ Work of Creating
The Bible teaches that the world was created “ex nihilo” by the Word of God. “Ex Nihilo”
means “out of nothing.” God spoke and the world was created “from nothing that is seen.”
Since that time, God has held creation together. In the end times, He will burn up the old
heaven and earth and bring down a new one. Part of His future creative activity will be creating a
new heaven and earth.
In Genesis 1:26-27, we find the use of the plural pronouns let “us,”
and in “our.” The writer of the book of Genesis did not specify what
the plural pronoun “let us” represented. This passage states that
the Holy Spirit was been involved in the creation. We read that the
Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (Gen 1:1-2).
Two members of the trinity, God the Father and His Spirit are
named as having created. Jesus is not explicitly mentioned to have
been involved in the creation in Genesis.
The New Testament is filled with passages that state that Jesus Christ was the Creator. John 1: 1-3
states:
2
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the
beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made
3
that was made.
