18 After all this, the LORD afflicted Jehoram with an incurable disease of the bowels. In the course of
time, at the end of the second year, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great
pain. His people made no funeral fire in his honor, as they had for his predecessors.
20 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He
passed away, to no one’s regret, and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
3. Read the entire story of the character in all locations in the Bible. The only other passage in which
Jehoram is mentioned is 2 Kings 8:16-9:37 (NIV)
16 In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram son
17
of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. He was thirty-two years old when he became king,
18
and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of
19
Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD. Nevertheless,
for the sake of his servant David, the LORD was not willing to destroy Judah. He had promised to maintain
a lamp for David and his descendants forever.
21
20 In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king. So Jehoram went to
[a]
Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and
broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. To this day Edom has been in
22
rebellion against Judah. Libnah revolted at the same time.
23 As for the other events of Jehoram’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals
24
of the kings of Judah? Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David.
And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.
4. Now read again, this time selecting various character qualities, or lack of them, you want to point
out in your study.
Here is a list of things Jehoram did in rebellion to the Lord:
1. When he became king, he killed six of his brothers…he was a murderer. He also killed many of his
father’s officials who probably were righteous men.
2. He rebelled against the Lord just as the kings of Israel had done.
3. He married the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, among the most wicked characters in the Bible.
4. He did evil in the sight of the Lord.
5. He built high places of worship to false Gods in Judah and caused the people to prostitute themselves
against God.
6. He was warned by God to change his ways but refused.
Because of his rebellion, here are some things the Lord did in response:
1. God brought the Philistines against Judah. They attacked Jerusalem and carried away much wealth
along with Jehoram’s wives and children, save one.
2. God brought the Edomites against Judah.
3. His reign was very short, only 8 years.
4. God afflicted him with an incurable disease where his bowels began to fall out of his body. He ended
up dying in great pain.
5. He passed away and not a single person was sad to see him go.
6. He was NOT buried in the tomb of the kings in Jerusalem. In other words, he was denied status
among the kings of Judah and was isolated in his burial.
