FIGURE: or FIGHT- BEND
This bend will join two cords or light lines pretty snugly and the bend
does not usually jam beyond redemption. In larger line, the knot becomes
rather bulky and unwieldy but remains a useful bend. In particular, it has a
virtue in that once you know the figure eight stopper, you cannot fail to tie
the figure eight bend correctly.
The same applies to yet another variety, the figure eight eye. This is tied
just like the figure eight knot, except that you use a doubled end. It does
not jam as easily as an overhand eye and holds well unless the end and the
standing part are forced apart. An overhand knot joining them gives added
security.
Of late, the knot and its varieties are called simply “figure eight.” I opt,
privately at least, for the more traditional and deservedly stylish “figure of
eight” name, while stopping short of the less informative “Flemish knot”
variety.
