On December 11, 1848, Titus Hutchinson conveyed the hall in the brick wing for $500 to the Sons of Temper-
ance who used it as a place of meeting. John Hutchinson was keeping tavern at the time. “The Vermont pro-
hibitory law took effect in March 1853. It provided that liquor could be sold for ‘medicinal, chemical and me-
chanical purposes only’ by an agent appointed in each town by the County Commissioner. Innkeepers could
not be agents.” By 1856, Titus Hutchinson’s business was established as a Temperance Tavern and the main
hotel was being run by a Mr. Stevens. It was at this time that the name of the establishment was referred to as
the Eagle Temperance Hotel. In 1858, a Caleb M. Benson is running the Eagle Hotel. H.B. Stevens had
moved to Brattleboro. It is presumed that he opened an establishment there under the same name of Eagle Ho-
tel.
