Lewis Lillie sold the business to P. G. Alden in 1839. “An amiable wife and two attractive young ladies, who
         looked after the internal economy and management of the house, gave Alden’s Hotel quite a reputation for
         awhile.” It was in 1840 that a third story was added, and it was referred to as Church’s Hotel. The 1844 Ver-
         mont Almanac cites Prentiss G. Alden as the proprietor of the Eagle Hotel.
