Into the Cosmos

             Noah’s
             Orders
             Were not
             To build
             Storm drains.

            The final area of speculation to be considered here is just that: the
        end of the world. It is but recently that science has taken
        eschatology out of the realm of myth and apocalyptic Armageddon.
        In the great flood legend, man is helpless against the elements of his
        destruction; only divine guidance saves the progenitors of the next
        cosmic cycle. In contrast, the contemporary situation is clearly man-
        made; we therefore perceive the possibility of undoing it. But even
        among those who see no way to prevent nuclear war, many advocate
        the equivalent of storm drains (bomb shelters), when the
        construction of an ark (space vehicle) may be more important.
        Unfortunately,  the  modern  Noah  will  have  no  vessel  to  board;
        politicians seem to plan in shorter timeframes than gods.
