Into the Cosmos
Thus nature can ignore
The mess that mankind makes:
Like others gone before
We’re just a chance it takes.
Gluckman’s last words here on man and his probable fate are a
bit fatalistic, but our species does have the power to extinguish itself.
Despite our myths, we exist as the result of a chain of random
events; the cosmos does not care whether or not we survive.
Logic’s value is in opposing those fantasies preventing us from
facing our real problems. If our intelligence cannot get us out of
what it has gotten us into, that greatest irony of all will have no one
to appreciate it: the board will have no members.
