Gluckman’s concerns reflected in this collection of epigrams may
be represented in a fourfold flow of two dimensions: abstractness-
concreteness and self-applicable or other-applicable. These rather
tidy distinctions blur and overlap, as mentioned in the introduction;
nevertheless, they do correspond to the author’s view of the subject
matter he focused on during two decades of thought and expression.
As he was fond of saying, “I am interested in others as subjects, and
myself as an object.” His philosophical, psychological, sociological
and biological speculations and observations thus manifest an
idiosyncratic sensibility requiring the gloss contained herein.
