The Big Idea – Act 1
Undoubtedly suggestable to the right words,
In number they are a considerable force;
I must do my best to involve them in my plans.
(turns to HALFWITS) Hey, fellas, I want to thank you for coming up
here this afternoon.
HALFWIT 1: Who, us?
HALFWIT 2: You mean him?
HALFWIT 3: No, me!
HALFWIT 2: I heard him first!
HALFWIT 1: Are they with me?
UTOPIAN: I mean all of you: that is to say, you and you and you.
Everyone that’s here right now except me.
HALFWIT 1: Ah! You make everything so clear!
UTOPIAN: I’m very pleased you’ve come to the meeting.
HALFWIT2: Meeting? Oh.
UTOPIAN: Why, what’s the matter?
HALFWIT 2: I thought it was “eating.”
UTOPIAN: Well, never fear: at the end of the meeting, we’ll all go
find something to eat. In fact, I know a tree nearby that has very good
mangoes this time of year.
HALFWIT 3: Great! But what is a “meeting,” then?
UTOPIAN: In this case, it’s a bunch of people getting together to
talk about things until they decide what they want to do.
HALFWIT 3: Talking...
UTOPIAN: Which leads to...
HALFWIT 2: (after thought) Eating!
