Act 3: Overlooking the river fork
CLOWN 1: (enters left, breathing heavily) Whoosh, what a climb!
And no shade, not even a boulder to sit on.
CLOWN 2: (enters right, striding briskly) Hello, my friend! How did
you get here?
CLOWN 1: Why, how do you think? I went down to the river fork
and clawed my way up the side of the embankment. How did you get
here?
CLOWN 2: Oh, I just thought I’d walk over to the edge of the
embankment and see if I could locate the fork of the river.
CLOWN 1: (groans) Why didn’t you tell me there was an easier way?
CLOWN 2: To do what?
CLOWN 1: To find this place.
CLOWN 2: But I already knew how to find this place. I didn’t know
how to find the fork of the river. Why didn’t you tell me there was an
easier way?
CLOWN 1: To do what?
CLOWN 2: To find the fork of the river.
CLOWN 1: But I already knew how to find that. Now, all you have
to do is take a good running jump off the edge of the cliff and you’ll
be right on the fork. Or, if you like, I’ll give you a good push to start
you on your way.
CLOWN 2: You really are too kind, but I don’t really want to go
there; I just wanted to find it. Ah, I wish I knew this place as well as
you do.
CLOWN 1: What do you mean? You obviously know it just as well
as I do, no more and no less, since we are both standing on it.
