The Big Idea – Act 3
CLOWN 2: But you know it in relation to the river fork, and I have
yet to find that landmark.
CLOWN 1: What! You refuse to take my word that I just spent half
the afternoon struggling up the side of a cliff to get here from there?
CLOWN 2:
Perhaps I haven’t made much sense to you,
But sense to you is made without much glue.
No—don’t protest: just let me say my piece;
Until it’s said my saying shall not cease.
For equal knowledge of this location,
We must see it in equal relation.
But now your knowledge is ahead of mine,
Since you arrived by way of that incline:
The river fork exists for you as fact,
For me as just a wilderness untracked.
CLOWN 1:
I don’t get the point of all your raving;
What breath you possess you should be saving,
For the difficult journey down the cliff
(I hope your joints are not too weak or stiff).
Once there your deficient comprehension
Will be finished—as will our dissension,
Since we could resume our conversation
With our knowledge in equilibration.
So, here you go, now; I’ll give you a hand—
Be sure to let me know when you hit land.
CLOWN 2: (resists shoving to left by CLOWN 1)
Stop that! Don’t you know what your brain is for?
My going down there won’t even the score!
