Mrs. Whittle’s Call to Judgement
It tinkled merrily when he picked it up. He supposed its dying
battery was responding to the movement or the warmth of his palm.
He turned it over, looking for a brand name or country of origin;
none was visible, but he detected a seam along one edge. He laid the
cube down and stood up to apply leverage on it with a letter-opener.
After a couple of tries he felt the device coming apart. Suddenly, with
a clap of thunder, the box plunged down through the desk, the floor,
the basement, and on to the center of the earth.
