The Cosmic Bore
“Next, we must admit that we possess no means of forcibly
terminating the broadcast. Bombs and death-rays have failed. But
why does it go on, cycle after cycle, telling us what we already
know? Is it a flaw in its design, an unforeseen bug in its software?
No one can say. But I will say this: the only way to find out is to
stop looking and stop listening. Then it will no longer sense an
audience is present, and should shove off in search of a new one.
It would not be programmed to sing the praises of Valgus Varus
to an empty auditorium.”
“So, I say to you, people of the earth: turn off your radios and
television sets. Every single one of them. If you will not do it
voluntarily, then you must be forced to comply. Not until the plug
has been pulled on every last receiving device on this planet will
we know whether or not my plan has merit. The decision is yours:
I smashed my last TV more than twenty years ago. Good day.”
