Then I expressed a grievance: “I’m the only one-dimensional letter: no
angles or curves at all. Why, I’m so skinny that I fall right through words
into the next line. If only I had another little piece in some other
      direction—maybe a nice perpendicular like T.”
And I stood next to T, admiring the other’s cross-bar. But the other
      letters groaned.
“Now look what I has done: formed a word!”
T looked around in surprise: yes, it was true. I had done it. Now the
vacation would have to end, and the alphabet have to go back to its job
of making words, words, words, and more words.

And so the letters went back to work. “Ah, it was fun while it lasted,”
      sighed W, leading the way.
“Yes, it was,” agreed R. “Perhaps someday we can do it again.”
O and K, separated again, nodded happily. They knew that words were
their business, and had to be attended to, but that whenever they could
take a break, and do something else with themselves for a while, it would
      be OK.
