Then by a ladder the monster stopped short:
“This will do just fine,” he said with a snort.
A tentacle shot up, right past my face—
And knocked a manhole cover off its place!
“Farewell!” he shouted, sliding down the stream;
“Tomorrow you’ll think this all a bad dream.”
His beady black eyes were gone: I was free!
I climbed like a monkey climbing a tree.
