Suddenly one of them went off in haste:
No indecision and no time to waste.
The other remained and I held my breath—
I’ll admit I was frightened half to death.
Then it came at me fizzing and snapping,
So close I could see its three tongues flapping;
I thought I’d be killed—but no, it stopped short,
Glared at me harshly and let out a snort.
