woman could simply indicate her humble status, or, by a rather
loose analogy refer to Moses’s hike up and down the mountain.
To compound the mystery, AR did not lacquer the finished
piece; he might have been dissatisfied with his handiwork, for
unknown reasons. The absence of any sculpture identifiable as
Moses, whom AR called “the best man in the world,” is as
curious as the lack of a Herzl portrait.
