but she took one look at me and shrieked, almost fainting. I looked
dirty and half-starved, and lice were swarming all over my clothes.
She would not let me enter the house any further. Quickly grabbing a
broom, she shoved me out and made me go into the woodshed at the
back of the yard. She brushed an army of lice off my overcoat and,
despite the cold weather, made me take off all my clothes. She kicked
them outside on the snow where the lice would freeze. Then I wiped
my body with wet rags and put on clean clothes. This misadventure
brought an end to my desires for greener pastures, and I settled down
in Pelcovizna for the time being.
