was orthodox, but at the same time a liberal in thought, having read
books and daily papers; he wasn’t a bit superstitious. He never
reprimanded me for the mischief I committed in the bet hamidrash, but
he saw that my time was being wasted there, and looked around
Warsaw for a job for me.
