upon which critics have commented—the book did win last year’s
Sula Prize—are not the result of psychedelic drugs or spiritual
enlightenment. They are the sparks emitted by the collapsing embers
of a once-blazing intellect. Ransom decided to share those works
with the world before revealing what lay behind them. Perhaps other
work by creative people in their declining years will now be
reappraised in this light.”
