        revealed the DNA of this strain to be very close to that of 1918. It
        would be a race to get enough people inoculated before a pandemic
        influenza erupted. But the source had to be shut down. I hoped I had
        the smoking gun in my pocket. Now I had to get the samples tested
        quickly.
          “Thank you, Ayla.” We were back at the loading dock. “You have
        done a great service to humanity.”
          I turned, heading for the fence we had easily scaled on our way in.
          “No problem. But I’ve got to leave a calling card.”
          Suddenly she had an oblong object in her hand. Before I realized
        what was happening, she had given one end of it a twist and thrown
        the thing at a window next to the door we had used. It cracked the
        glass  and  exploded.  Instantly  alarm  bells  rang  and  the  area  was
        flooded with light.
          “Run for it, Jack!” she screamed, and took off like a sprinter. My
        jacket was weighed down with samples.
