Contraption
From the mind that traps,
The trapped mind
Catches a thought;
And thinking itself
A trapper,
Again is caught.
“Outsmart oneself” obscures the gaffe:
It’s vague on how one gets in Dutch;
But the phrase “too clever by half”
Clearly tells how and by how much.
No matter what victim it picks
For pitiless dismembering,
In memory’s black bag of tricks
The cruelest is remembering.
