replaced by something else of equal mass-energy from its destination.
That explains your transformation into grapefruit; the bench you were
sitting on is back in my workroom. The second consideration is that
for electromagnetic radiation time does not pass, at any point along
the wave of its propagation; neither does time pass in our minds
when we join disparate images together.”
“I’m sure Pamplemousse has no theoretical grasp of this process. I
think it works like this: for any two points that are unconnectable
there are two other significant points in spacetime, where their
respective past and future hyperspheres intersect. That is to say, a sort
of fifth-dimensional link of timelessness connects all four points. The
transfer must take place along the light wave boundaries, backward
and forward in time relative to the end points, but simultaneously
from the viewpoint of the light waves connecting them. Somehow the
synchronous mental coupling of objects enables the channel to open
and the exchange to be made. Perhaps Jung was also right.”
“I quickly discovered that a simple mechanical device like a
pendulum is all that’s needed to keep the objects in focus. The
discipline learned in mystical practices helps, too. That’s another
reason Pamplemousse has a monastery as his front: he can retreat
into isolated meditation without arousing suspicion.”
“But you did it, too, Captain Kaga,” interjected Lugo, “and I’ve
never known you to do much meditating.”
“True. What I did was put together some slightly more
sophisticated hardware than Pamplemousse has, a technological
shortcut to centering my thoughts.”
“Great!” said Lugo. “Is that what you’ve brought with you?”
