Investigating the Mystery of the Talking Plant

Kaga frowned and thought for a moment. “The stains on that blade
are fairly dry, so we can assume the damage was done several hours
ago, during the night. Now, if the main entrance doors were locked
securely and remained closed, whoever did this must have come in
through one of the doors connecting the central structure with the
other three. Do all three doors require electronic identification?”
Farnitt hesitated, and Lugo quickly replied, “No, only the doors
leading to the PKU section and the Center staff area. The door
between the exhibit hall and the emissaries’ quarters is not controlled
mechanically because we cannot expect every alien to understand how
to operate such a human-oriented device. Instead we maintain a staff
person on a twenty-four hour basis to act as doorkeeper as well as a
sort of general trouble-shooter for any problems our guests may
have.”
Kaga immediately asked: “Who was on duty last night—and what
are the shift hours?”
Farnitt flushed before replying, “Why, uh, I think it was Miss
Woswoot…the night shift is from 2200 to 0600, but I’m sure she
arrived early last night to attend the opening.”
Captain Kaga nodded, but hi s gaze had drifted back to the sonopor.
“Mr. Farnitt, until we find out a few more things about the events
of last night, I would appreciate your sealing off this exhibition area
from the public. In fact, it would be wise if you did so immediately. I
must also ask you not to reveal anything you’ve seen in this room—
not to anyone. Is that acceptable to you?
“Yes, yes,” said Farnitt, his manner becoming agitated once again.
“I’ll do as you suggest. It’s almost time to open, so we’d better get out
of here.”
Kaga and Lugo stood in the main hall as Farnitt locked up the
Tzigian gallery and rushed back to the staff area. Then they headed for
the rear pentagonal wing, where the aliens were lodged.
“The records, which cannot be forged, show him leaving the Center
at 0245,” said Lugo.
“Hmm,” said Kaga. “Did you notice the bags under his eyes? Mr.
Farnitt did not have a restful night, of that you may be sure.”
