“No doubt,” agreed Kaga. “This domicile of yours is very
interesting, General. Do you stay in it all night long?”
“Night? Night is good for hunting,” mused old Sleeth. “Good for
stalking your prey. No, I don’t stay here all night. I put on my helmet
and armor and go out looking.”
“Looking for what?” asked Kaga, choking slightly.
Sleeth gazed at his useless weapon. “Harumph! There’s not much
else to do but go down and try to scare that human at the front desk. I
creep up very slowly, then—”
He suddenly leaped at them, jaws wide open, forelegs extended with
long hooked claws unsheathed. Lugo and Kaga involuntarily jumped
back.
“Aha!” snarled Sleeth triumphantly. “I had you that time! In the old
days, when I had all my teeth, you would have been cut to shreds.”
The time! thought Kaga, does this brute ever know what time it is?
Aloud he said, “Was that long after the opening had concluded?”
“Did you succeed last night?” asked Kaga, regaining his composure
with difficulty.
“Ah! The human wasn’t there! I edged around the hall very quietly
and pounced on the desk— all for nothing. Then I came back here for
a little nap.”
“I edged around the hall very quietly…”
