Recounting the Binary Neeks
“Hello, Lugo,” said Kaga. “I didn’t know the PKU had opened its
compound for art lessons.”
Lugo smiled weakly, and ushered Captain Kaga into his office.
“110100,” she said. “Weren’t you 110101 yesterday?”
“Pemulla,” he said into his ComSet, “please don’t route any
incoming calls to me for the next few hours. I’ll be busy with Captain
Kaga.”
Kaga had seated himself next to Lugo’s desk. “You know,” he said
cautiously, “it really is against regulations to allow unauthorized locals
in here—not to mention deliberately exposing them to our culture.”
“Don’t you think I know it?” Lugo paced nervously around the
room. “That’s just a minor indication of the problems I’ve got here.
We’re sitting on top of a situation that’s going to blow up at any
moment. Unless you and I can figure out a way to avoid what’s
corning, the PKU mission on this planet is doomed and our very
lives threatened!”
