Page 30 - SYTYGIB: Ancient Egypt
P. 30

Some jobs for ancient Egyptian kids were divided between girls and boys.
Boys were often given the job of watching flocks or tending cattle, which sounds like it could be quite heavy on the poo side of things.
A picture in one tomb shows a boy chasing birds away from a heap of grain, which could be
a common chore for a young lad.
Of course, it was all
fine and dandy if the birds were cheeky little sparrows, but if an ostrich was having a nibble at your grain, he’d be the one doing the chasing.
As far as anyone is aware, however, there are no pictures in tombs of boys having their bottoms pecked by angry ostriches, so it must have been a rare occurrence.
