Eating gritty bread wore down people´s teeth, because the flour usually had sand in it. Now that´s what you call a SANDwich!
Girls were less likely to do jobs like these. They tended to help their mothers doing household chores such as cooking, sewing, making bread and the like, which are blissfully poo-free (hopefully).
However, they may also have been servants for rich families and royalty. Lucky little Prince Poshpants wouldn’t have had any bird-chasing jobs on his to-do list. In the upper classes, it would have been slaves or servants who performed minor chores.
In one image from the time a servant girl arranges cushions on a chair while another smooths down bedsheets. It’s bad enough having to make your own bed, so imagine having to do it for someone else. Barbaric!
