changing colours
In autumn, days get shorter and the weather gets cooler. Trees spread their seeds as their fruits and nuts ripen, fall to the ground or get carried away by the wind.
On many trees, green leaves will start
to fade to yellow, orange, red and brown. To help survive the winter and save water, the tree will shed its leaves and let them fall down to the ground.
Chlorophyll helps trees make energy by photosynthesis.
so the green chlorophyll is removed . . .
and the leaves change colour.
The green colour in leaves comes from a pigment called chlorophyll.
As days get shorter, the rest of the tree can store these useful parts of the leaf . . .
