The story is told from two timeline perspectives in alternating chapters: one timeline (“Before”) begins from the moment Vasily and his father flee their home and attempt to reach England, and depicts their dangerous journey, and the other timeline (“After”) begins from the moment Vasily has washed up on the shore of a beach in England, separated from his father, and must find his way back to him, while avoiding the criminal gangs, police, and government forces who are looking for him.
The “Before” timeline begins by introducing Vasily and his gift.At home – where his grandmother has been trying to teach him to properly understand his gift – Vasily’s father is in danger after trying to smuggle information out of the country which exposes the corruption of their government. He decides to leave, and Vasily goes with him.Together they manage to cross the border together – with the help of Vasily’s gift – and slowly travel across Europe, aiming for France, from where they will pay for someone to smuggle them to England.
The “After” timeline begins with Vasily alone, on the beach. He is quickly found by Ronnie, a member of an organised crime gang, who takes Vasily with him.Vasily demonstrates his gift to Ronnie – without telling him what it is or how he’s doing it – to show his worth, and Ronnie agrees that he will pay Vasily enough money to travel to London to look for his father if he will help him first. Ronnie takes Vasily to a meet-up and tells him he must raise the alarm if anything is suspicious.
