yellow. Bea stared at the huge array of vegetables. She knew rabbits liked leafy greens the best so she gathered up some kale and broccoli.
“It’s good to see you girls eating healthy things as well as all those sweets,” said Mrs Rinberg approvingly.
Bea didn’t have time to explain. “Thank you very much!” she cried, before running out of the shop again. Then she crouched beside the bush and, pulling some leaves off the bunch of kale, she held them out for the rabbit.
The bunny’s nose twitched. Then she hopped a bit closer. “Come on, little rabbit!” said Bea softly. “I bet you’ll love this.” The rabbit hesitated before pushing her nose out of the branches. “That’s it, Bea! I think it’s coming out,” whispered Keira.
The bunny hopped a little further. Then she bit off a chunk of kale and chewed it eagerly. Bea stayed as still as possible, letting the rabbit take another bite. Then she moved backwards very slowly, letting the creature follow her. Once the rabbit was out of the bush, she would be able to scoop her up safely.
The rabbit chewed the rest of the kale and looked around for more. Keira quickly handed Bea the broccoli. Bea edged back a little more so the rabbit had to come out of hiding to reach the food. The bunny’s ears pricked up and she twitched her nose, before making four tiny hops.
Bea waited till the rabbit took a nibble of broccoli, before leaning forwards and putting one hand under her furry white tummy. She lifted the bunny into her arms and hugged her tightly. The rabbit’s fur felt soft and warm against her cheek. “What shall we call you?”
she asked, stroking the rabbit’s velvety ears.
