“We should call her Goldie because of her beautiful fur,” suggested Keira.
“Goldie suits her!” said Bea, smiling.
Goldie snuggled in Bea’s arms, looking very comfortable, until Rosie – who was tired of waiting on the pavement – burst out in a torrent of barking. The rabbit shrank against Bea’s chest, her eyes wide.
“Shh, Rosie!” cried Bea. “You’re scaring the rabbit.”
But the puppy didn’t understand. She pulled on her lead, jumping up with her paws on Bea’s legs. Goldie started to wriggle out of Bea’s grasp.
“It’s all right. You’re safe with me!” Bea desperately tried to calm her down but the bunny flexed her strong back legs and sprang right out of Bea’s arms.
Goldie landed on the pavement, her ears pricked up in fright. Further down the road, a cyclist rang his bell. Then a car hooted at the traffic lights. Goldie ran back and forth, jumping at each noise. Bea rushed after the little rabbit but she slipped out of her reach all over again.
A man came past wheeling a little boy in a pushchair. The child gave a shriek as they passed and Goldie leapt into the air in shock. She swerved away from the pushchair and fled down the path, heading straight for the busy road.
“Stop!” Bea gave chase, her heart thumping like a drum.
Keira grabbed Rosie’s lead and held tight, her hand over her mouth.
Goldie went on hopping towards the traffic. A car roared by, sending a crisp wrapper swirling into the air. The bunny ran right to the edge of the kerb. Her ears were pinned back in terror.
