A ‘spring tide’ does not only occur in the springtime! It is the name for the highest tide of the month, which in turn produces the lowest tide as its opposite. A ‘neap tide’ is the lowest high tide of the month and the highest low tide – this means that a neap tide shows the least difference between its high and low tides.
It is a good idea to check the tides before you go swimming or take a
boat out on the sea. You can do this online or you can buy tide times booklets
from your local seaside town.
The moon affects the sea’s tides. The
tide changes every six hours, so if the tide is at its lowest (or the sea has ‘gone out’) at six in the morning, the tide will be at its highest again at midday.
