Black History Month is in October in Britain. It’s when people celebrate the contributions that black people have made to the country. The idea for Black History Month originally came from the USA and it is still celebrated there in February every year.
The American historian Carter G. Woodson came up with the idea. He had found that Americans knew a lot about the history of white people in their country, but that no one seemed to speak or write about the history of Black Americans. He wanted people to be properly educated so that Black people would no longer be discriminated against and treated badly because of the colour of their skin, so he set up the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915 which encouraged historians to research and write about Black history
and culture.
