In the 1970s, a man called Akyaaba Addai-Sebo went from Britain to America and was inspired by Black History Month. He thought that Britain should be celebrating it, too, so he started the British version in 1987.
Black History Month is a time for celebration and remembrance, and there are many wonderful talks, food festivals and musical events you can go to – everything that celebrates the achievements, culture and contributions from Black people to our lives today.
It is believed that Black History Month is celebrated in October in Britain because, traditionally, October is when African chiefs and leaders gather to settle their differences, so Akyaaba chose this month to reconnect with African roots.
