5th November Guy Fawkes or Bonfire Night
This is an annual commemoration of the day in 1605 when a man called Guy Fawkes was arrested for being a part of the ‘Gunpowder Plot’. The plot was thought up by a group of men who wanted
to blow up King James I and the
Houses of Parliament in London. Guy Fawkes was found hiding beneath the House of Lords, guarding some explosives. Thankfully, the bombs never went off.
Nowadays, people spend the evening going to firework displays, standing around a big bonfire and eating hot dogs! It is a great way to chase away the winter blues.
11th November Armistice Day (Remembrance Day)
Armistice Day or Remembrance Day is a time for remembering all those who were killed in the First and Second World Wars and other wars that have since followed. A two-minute silence is
held to remember the dead on the Sunday nearest to 11th November. People traditionally wear a red poppy around
this time to show that they have not forgotten the people who died in the war.
