Winter Wildlife Wishing Tree
Rabbits, squirrels and other wildlife don’t have much to eat in winter, when the trees and bushes are bare. So why not help these hungry creatures by decorating an outdoor tree full of tasty treats for them to eat? You can make winter wildlife’s wishes come true!
Ask your grown-up to heat the oil over a medium-high heat in a large saucepan. Drop your kernels in and put the lid back on.
Turn up the heat and wait for the kernels to start popping.
Keep shaking the pan to stop the corn from burning. As soon as the popping has slowed to 2-3 seconds between pops, your corn is ready.
Remove from the heat, pour into a bowl and wait until it cools.
When the popcorn has cooled completely, start threading it on to the wool using the craft needle, alternating popcorn
and cranberries – or making any pattern you like.
Once finished, take your garland outdoors to wrap it round a tree. You could even lay it over bushes or shrubs,
or wrap it around the bars of a balcony. Now sit back and watch your winter wildlife have
a very happy Christmas treat.
You will need:
100 g of dried corn kernels
whole cranberries,
2 bags (about 700 g)
3 tablespoons sunflower, coconut or other vegetable oil
a large craft needle
thick thread or knitting wool, about 3 metres
