Frogs and beetles being omens of bad luck might sound a bit weird, but some of the Aztecs, other myths and superstitions were genuinely, scream-out-loud, hide- under-the-bed, let-a-little-bit-of-wee- out-by-mistake, TERRIFYING!
Have you heard of the Tzitizimime? No? Well brace yourself, because you’re about to.
Tzitzimime were horrific sTaR dEmOnS that waited in the darkness for the end of the world to come, a time when humans and gods could no longer keep the world alive.
When that time came they’d go, “Right guys, this is our BiG moment! Let’s dO this thing!” and then get all attacky and, you know, destroy humankind and stuff. The usual.
To try to prevent this deeply irritating situation
from occurring the Aztecs held a ceremony called Xiuhmolpilli, which means ‘The Tying Together of the Years’, to make sure the world carried on for another 52 years (that was an Aztec ‘century’).
FAVOURITE. BOOK. EVER.
Bad news, by the way. Tzitzimime were particularly fond of children. And by that we don’t mean they liked taking kids to ThEmE PaRkS and buying them IcE CrEaM.
