While stabbing yourself in the ear every morning with a cactus spike might sound like a nasty way to start the day, it ain,t nearly as GRUESOME as some of the more extreme ways the Aztecs offered blood to the gods to keep them happy.
The Aztecs were renowned for performing HuMaN sAcRiFiCeS. It was a hugely important part of Aztec life – or should that be death? – and many thousands of men, women and children were put to death during this period.
Every day at the Great Temple in Tenochtitlán, people were led up the steps and laid out on a stone slab where their arms and legs would be held. Then a priest would cut their chest using a vErY ShArP knife made from a black, glass-like volcanic stone called obsidian.
If that sounds like it would sting a little, the priest would then reach iNsIdE the chest of the sacrificed person and RiP OuT their StIlL-BeAtInG HeArT before holding it up to the gods. oUcH!
Note!
If you’re about to have lunch you may want to put the book down at this point and come back to it once you’ve digested everything fully.
The body would then be thrown down the stairs of the pyramid, which sounds slightly harsh, all things considered.
I´ve just remembered I have a dentist appointment. Must dash.
Nice try, pal.
