So . . . it seemed that the Aztecs thought that A LOT of blood and human sacrifices were needed to keep the gods happy. But who were these bloodthirsty gods, and how many were there?
The simple answer to ‘how many’ is: no one knows for sure, but basically A LoT. Probably many hundreds.
Some of the ones who were most important included Tonatiuh, god of the sun; Huitzilopochtli, god of war; Tlaloc, god of rain; and Centeotl, god of maize.
tezcatlipoca
What are you god of?
Rain. And you?
Fly egg scum cakes.
Bad luck.
     quetzalcÓatl
Two great rivals in the god world were Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcóatl.
Tezcatlipoca was the big man when it came to warriors, sorcerers, sin, misery and the night sky. Pretty full on, Mr T.
On the other hand, Quetzalcóatl sounds like a much more chilled dude. He introduced all the good stuff – culture, writing, the calendar, agriculture and even chocolate. The god of chocolate? Sounds like our sort of guy!
Still, to avoid ending up on the old sacrificial slaberoony with a stinky priest about to get all knifey on you, best sticking around the here and now, eh?
