Not many people would have survived the hole-in-head situation – in fact, sadly for many people in history this deep, survival of aNyThInG wasn’t guaranteed. Diseases, accidents and a harsh, hard life meant that the age you were expected to live to was very low compared to nowadays – just 25–40 years old.
That meant that if you were 10, you could be almost halfway through your life already. And by the time you were ready to leave school, you’d be a proper OlD cOdGeR! Although just to be clear, they didn’t have schools back then.
I remember way back when I was nine years old.
Oh yes, and when was that?
Last week.
Many people in these times would have died as babies or in childhood,
and many women would have died during childbirth, which shows how tough life would have been without doctors, nurses, medicines and hospitals.
Even if you did make it into adulthood, you’d probably end up suffering from the likes of arthritis – a disease causing painful swelling and stiffness of the joints – due to years of walking and back-breaking work. Work that probably would have begun when you were just a child.
