  glacier A large, very slow-moving river of ice, formed from compacted snow, found on mountains or near the North or South Pole.
greenhouse effect The warming of the Earth’s atmosphere caused by increased quantities of greenhouse gases in the air which trap heat from the sun.
greenhouse gas A gas which causes the greenhouse effect,
the most important of which are carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour.
habitat A plant or animal’s natural home or environment.
homeland The country a person was born and brought up in.
human rights The basic rights of every human being whatever their sex, race or nationality, including the right to life, freedom and education.
hunger strike A form of protest in which someone refuses to eat, usually for days or even weeks.
hydroelectric power Energy generated by fast-flowing or falling water, often using dams.
indigenous A person, plant or object that comes from a particular place.
Nobel Peace Prize An award given each year to someone who has done important work for world peace.
organic A method of farming and gardening without chemicals, using only natural products to help plants grow and be healthy.
parliament The group of people who make decisions for a country and make or change its laws. Parliament is also the building in which these people meet and work.
permaculture A method of producing food and energy inspired by nature, which protects the environment and does not use up the Earth’s natural resources.
pesticide A substance used by farmers to kill insects that are harmful to crops.
petition A document signed by lots of people to ask a government or other organisation to do, or not do, a particular thing. Also a formal legal request.
plantation An area, often in a tropical country, where trees have been planted, usually to produce a crop such as tea, rubber or cocoa.
pollution Poisonous or harmful substances, such as chemicals or plastic, that have been introduced into the sea, land or air.
