conference A formal meeting, often held over a few days, that brings together a group of people who have a shared interest.
conservation An effort to protect and preserve something that is valuable, especially the natural environment.
coral bleaching A damaging whitening of coral which occurs when they release the algae living inside them that give them both food and their colour. Bleaching occurs when seas become warmer or polluted with chemicals.
coral reef An underwater ecosystem made of corals – very small sea animals whose hard, stony skeleton is formed on the outside of their bodies.
crowdfunding A way of raising money for a project, usually via the Internet, by asking lots of people to give small amounts.
culture The traditional ideas, customs and ways of a particular group of people.
demonstration A march or gathering of people to protest against something or express their opinions on an issue such as climate change.
desert A large area of land with very little water, trees or plants, often (but not always) covered in sand.
desertification The process by which land becomes dry desert unsuitable for growing crops on. It is often caused by drought, deforestation or farming practices.
ecological Involved with or concerning ecology, which is the relation of different forms of life to one another and their environment.
ecosystem All the plants and animals that live in a particular area and the relationship between them and their environment.
environment The natural world, including plants, animals and the land, air and sea.
environmentally friendly Not damaging to the environment.
fossil fuel A natural fuel such as oil, coal or gas formed from the remains of plants and animals.
foundation An organisation that provides money for research or charity.
fracking The process of forcing sand or liquid into rock to take
out oil or gas
trapped in it.
