Migrations
Some animals belong to more than one habitat, making long distance journeys every year in search of food or mates. This is called migration. All different kinds of animals – birds, fish, insects, mammals, reptiles and crustaceans – go on these incredible journeys.
Most migrant birds leave the UK in the winter when it starts to get cold, and return again in the summer. However, there are a few species, such as waxwings, which come to the UK in winter from even colder regions like Scandinavia.
For some migrant animals, with extremely long migrations, the UK might just be one stop along a very long journey!
Monarch butterflies migrate from North America and southern Canada down to Mexico
Nightingales migrate from the UK to south-west Africa
