Academic Progression
QEGS is a selective academic school that prides itself on the breadth
and depth of its curriculum and the excellence of its teaching staff.
The wide array of subjects studied during the rst three years at QEGS allows both pupils and their teachers to identify areas of relative strength and informs the important choices and specialisation decisions to be made at GCSE and at A-level.
During Years 7 to 9 (KS3) a core curriculum is studied, led by specialist teachers. Pupils make full use of the rst-class teaching resources including the Science and Language Laboratories, Design and Technology Workshops, Theatre and the latest ICT resources within all departments.
Lessons from Year 7 upwards are designed to stretch our most able boys through our Gifted and Talented provision, which is supplemented by extra-curricular activities such as the Maths Olympiad and Debating Societies.
All pupils have a considerable learning and subject base before beginning their GCSEs. In Years 10 and 11, the emphasis is very much on the quality of GCSE grades. Pupils study nine full subjects — with English, Maths and at least one Science subject compulsory. Other subjects are chosen from the wide option
pool. The majority of grades each year are at 9–7 (equivalent A*– A) providing a strong base for A-level success.
At A-level, most students study three subjects.
They are encouraged to pursue subjects that they enjoy, and in which they have strengths. The wide choice of over 28 courses offers exibility and a variety of subject combinations. Subjects may be studied at QEGS or jointly with pupils from Wake eld Girls’ High School (WGHS).
